The ocean connects us all, and scuba diving in the ocean is a great way to connect as a family. Catalina Island continues to be the perfect place for scuba divers of all age and skills levels. The clear waters and abundant marine life make it a fantastic setting for your first-time divers to see some really amazing sea life. Are you about to dive into the world of scuba with your children? Read on to learn the answers to 9 FAQs about kids scuba diving.

.)   How old do kids have to be to start scuba diving? The minimum age for most introductory scuba diving programs is 8. A lot of programs for beginner divers start off with training in a shallow, safe setting like a swimming pool. The PADI Bubblemaker program and the PADI Seal Team program both help to teach basic scuba skills. For a full scuba certification such as the PADI Junior Open Water Diver, the minimum age is 10. This is the first level of scuba certification for kids, and it allows them to dive with a certified adult in open water, with some depth restrictions. Learn more about these course offerings at the PADI website.

.)   What’s the difference between a PADI Junior Open Water Diver and an adult PADI Open Water Diver? For both certifications, the curriculum and skill sets are the same. The major differences are the age requirements and restrictions on depth and diving with a buddy. Junior Open Water Divers—ages 10 to 14—need to dive with a certified adult or PADI professional. Depth limits are 40 feet for ages 10 to 11 and 60 feet for ages 12 to 14. When a Junior Open Water Diver turns 15, they can upgrade to a standard Open Water Diver Certification.

.)   What does a scuba course for kids cover? Your child will learn the principles of scuba diving, which include dive theory, safety procedures, and use of equipment. PADI offers some courses via e-learning, which can be convenient for many families. Instructors teach new divers basic scuba skills in the water before students complete a number of open water dives, applying their new skills.

.)   How can I tell if my kid is ready to learn to scuba dive? While there are age restrictions, parents are often the best judges of whether or not their children have the maturity, responsibility, and physical capability to begin scuba diving. Consider whether your child is interested in learning to dive. Ensure that your child feels comfortable in the water and has strong swimming skills. Be certain that your child will pay attention to scuba instructors to learn key safety protocol and directions. Know that there are some physical demands to scuba and that your child needs to be physically able to manage gear while in water and on land. All of these things are crucial for successful and safe diving experiences.

.)   Are there medical restrictions for kids who are learning to scuba dive? Yes, and it’s all in the name of safety. Like adult scuba divers, kids must complete a medical form in order to ensure they’re fit for diving. Those with health issues like asthma, respiratory illness, and ear problems may require a doctor’s clearance for diving. Get familiar with the PADI medical questionnaire so that you’re prepared.

.)   How should we prepare to begin scuba diving? Snorkeling is a great gateway to becoming scuba diver. It helps kids to get acclimated with the ocean and to get a sense of what it’s like to breath while underwater. Going for a snorkel is a fantastic way to explore the waters around Catalina; its marine protected areas have a huge array of beautiful marine life.
